Ma, non appena Goljadkin cominciava ad avvicinarsi ad Andréj Filìppovic' per giustificarsi in certo qual modo ai suoi occhi, così e così, e dimostrargli che lui non era come lo dipingevano i suoi nemici, che, ecco, lui era questo e quello, e che anzi aveva, oltre alle comuni innate sue qualità, anche questo e quest'altro... ecco che appariva immediatamente la persona nota per le sue basse intenzioni e, con qualche espediente dei più stomachevoli, in un colpo solo demoliva tutte le sue iniziative e proprio lì, quasi sotto il naso di Goljadkin, diffamava energicamente la sua reputazione, calpestava nel fango il suo amor proprio e poi, senza perdere tempo, prendeva il suo posto nell'ufficio e in società. Ora Go]jadkin sentiva un certo prurito alla testa causato da qualche scappellotto, da poco tempo ben meritato e umilmente accettato, ricevuto o nella vita comune oppure là in servizio, colpettino contro il quale era difficile protestare... Certo, io sono perfettamente d'accordo nel dire che balli di questo genere se ne vedono, sì, ma molto di rado. Serate danzanti come quelle, più simili a feste di famiglia che a balli veri e propri, possono svolgersi solo in case come, per esempio, la casa del consigliere di stato Bernadeiev. Dirò di più: ho perfino dei seri dubbi che in casa dei consiglieri di stato si possano dare simili balli. Oh, se io fossi poeta! More than once he awaked his ten- or eleven-year-old friend at night, simply to pour out his wounded feelings and weep before him, or to tell him some family secret, without realising that this was an outrageous proceeding. They threw themselves into each other's arms and wept. The boy knew that his mother loved him very much, but I doubt whether he cared much for her. She talked little to him and did not often interfere with him, but he was always morbidly conscious of her intent, searching eyes fixed upon him. Yet the mother confided his whole instruction and moral education to Stepan Trofimovitch. At that time her faith in him was unshaken. One can't help believing that the tutor had rather a bad influence on his pupil's nerves. When at sixteen he was taken to a lyceum he was fragile-looking and pale, strangely quiet and dreamy. (Later on he was distinguished by great physical strength.) One must assume too that the friends went on weeping at night, throwing themselves in each other's arms, though their tears were not always due to domestic difficulties.
