All the circumstances of their last interview suddenly came back to him, and he felt a rush of the feeling that had come upon him then. But he stood in the waiting-room, and people, who apparently had nothing to do with him, were continually passing to and fro before him. In the next room which looked like an office, several clerks were sitting writing and obviously they had no notion who or what Raskolnikov might be. He looked uneasily and suspiciously about him to see whether there was not some guard, some mysterious watch being kept on him to prevent his escape. But there was nothing of the sort: he saw only the faces of clerks absorbed in petty details, then other people, no one seemed to have any concern with him. He might go where he liked for them. The conviction grew stronger in him that if that enigmatic man of yesterday, that phantom sprung out of the earth, had seen everything, they would not have let him stand and wait like that. And would they have waited till he elected to appear at eleven? Either the man had not yet given information, or... or simply he knew nothing, had seen nothing (and how could he have seen anything?) and so all that had happened to him the day before was again a phantom exaggerated by his sick and overstrained imagination. This conjecture had begun to grow strong the day before, in the midst of all his alarm and despair. Thinking it all over now and preparing for a fresh conflict, he was suddenly aware that he was trembling- and he felt a rush of indignation at the thought that he was trembling with fear at facing that hateful Porfiry Petrovitch. What he dreaded above all was meeting that man again; he hated him with an intense, unmitigated hatred and was afraid his hatred might betray him. His indignation was such that he ceased trembling at once; he made ready to go in with a cold and arrogant bearing and vowed to himself to keep as silent ...

En la sala contigua trabajaban varios escribientes, y saltaba a la vista que ninguno de ellos tenía la menor idea de quién era Raskolnikof. El visitante paseó por toda la estancia una mirada retadora, preguntándose si habría allí algún esbirro, algún espía encargado de vigilarle para impedir su fuga. Pero no había nada de esto. Sólo veía caras de funcionarios que reflejaban cuidados mezquinos, y rostros de otras personas que, como los funcionarios, no se interesaban lo más mínimo por él. Se podría haber marchado al fin del mundo sin llamar la atención de nadie. Poco a poco se iba convenciendo de que si aquel misterioso personaje, aquel fantasma que parecía haber surgido de la tierra y al que había visto el día anterior, lo hubiera sabido todo, lo hubiera visto todo, él, Raskolnikof, no habría podido permanecer tan tranquilamente en aquella sala de espera. Y ni habrían esperado hasta las once para verle, ni le habrían permitido ir por su propia voluntad. Por lo tanto, aquel hombre no había dicho nada..., porque tal vez no sabía nada, ni nada había visto (cómo lo habría podido ver?), y todo lo ocurrido el día anterior no había sido sino un espejismo agrandado por su mente enferma. Esta explicación, que le parecía cada vez más lógica, ya se le había ocurrido el día anterior en el momento en que sus inquietudes, aquellas inquietudes rayanas en el terror, eran más angustiosas. Mientras reflexionaba en todo esto y se preparaba para una nueva lucha, Raskolnikof empezó a temblar de pronto, y...

Naturalmente, la han echado, pero ella, según dice, ha insultado al general e incluso le ha arrojado un objeto a la cabeza. Esto es muy posible. Lo que no comprendo es que no la hayan detenido. Ahora está describiendo la escena a todo el mundo, incluso a Amalia Ivanovna, pero nadie la entiende, tanto grita y se debate... Dice que ya que todos la abandonan, cogerá a los niños y se irá con ellos a la calle a tocar el órgano y pedir limosna, mientras sus hijos cantan y bailan. Y que irá todos los días a pedir ante la casa del general, a fin de que éste vea a los niños de una familia de la nobleza, a los hijos de un funcionario, mendigando por las calles. Les pega y ellos lloran. Enseña a Lena a cantar aires populares y a los otros dos a bailar. Destroza sus ropas y les confecciona gorros de saltimbanqui. No entraremos en detalles sobre la conversación que sostuvieron las dos mujeres, las lágrimas que derramaron ni la amistad que nació entre ellas. En esta entrevista, Dunia obtuvo el convencimiento de que su hermano no estaría nunca solo. Sonia había sido la primera en recibir su confesión: Rodia se había dirigido a ella cuando sintió la necesidad de confiar su secreto a un ser humano. A cualquier parte que el destino le llevara, ella le seguiría. Avdotia Romanovna no había interrogado sobre este punto a Sonetchka, pero estaba segura de que procedería así. Miraba a la muchacha con una especie de veneración que la confundía. La pobre Sonia, que se consideraba indigna de mirar a Dunia, se sentía tan avergonzada, que poco faltaba para que se echase a llorar. Desde el día en que se vieron en casa de Raskolnikof, la imagen de la encantadora muchacha que tan humildemente la había saludado había quedado grabada en el alma de Dunia como una de las más bellas y puras que había visto en su vida.
